Plan Your Visit
We're glad you're considering joining us. Here's everything you need to know before your first Sunday at St. Matthew's.
A Personal Welcome From Our Pastor
We are so glad you found your way here. Whether you are searching for a church home for the first time or returning to worship after a long season away, St. Matthew's is a place where you are genuinely expected and warmly welcomed. Charleston is a city with deep roots, and St. Matthew's has been a part of this community since 1847 — carrying on a tradition of reverent worship and faithful preaching that we believe speaks to something timeless in the human soul.
Rev. Dr. James Whitfield, our Senior Minister, would love to greet you in person — but in the meantime, he has prepared a brief word of welcome just for you. At St. Matthew's, you will find expository preaching rooted in Scripture, a liturgy shaped by centuries of Reformed worship, and a congregation that takes the life of faith seriously without taking itself too seriously. As one visitor put it, "There's a depth there I haven't felt in a long time." We believe you may find that same depth here.
Come as you are. Arrive with your questions, your doubts, your hopes. We will meet you there. We look forward to worshiping alongside you soon.

Your First Visit
There is no dress code at St. Matthew's — come as you are. You will find our congregation in everything from Sunday best to smart casual, and all are equally at home in our pews.
We love welcoming families. Children are always welcome in worship, and age-appropriate children's programming is available during our 11:00 AM service. A friendly greeter will walk you through our simple and secure check-in process when you arrive.
Our services follow a traditional Presbyterian liturgy — including congregational singing of hymns, Scripture readings, prayer, and an expository sermon from Rev. Dr. Whitfield grounded in the Word of God. Worship at St. Matthew's is reverent and ordered, yet deeply personal.
Our 8:30 AM Traditional Worship service runs approximately one hour, while our 11:00 AM Morning Worship service is typically 75 to 90 minutes. Wednesday Evening Prayer is a quieter, shorter gathering of about 45 minutes.
